Good afternoon Med Safety Colleagues,
We are interested in learning how other organizations share med safety information, process improvements, and system changes with physician teams. We have dedicated nursing educators, staff meetings, huddles, competency programs, and other mechanisms that help disseminate med safety updates and reinforce practice changes to nurses/pharmacists, but physician communication remains a challenge. Whether the change involves EHR optimization, medication-use process improvements, formulary updates, safety event learnings, order set modifications, smart pump initiatives, clinical decision support enhancements, or risk mitigation strategies, it can be challenging to ensure that physicians receive the information, understand its rationale, and incorporate it into their workflows.
I'm curious about what has been effective at your organizations:
1) How do you as medication safety officers communicate important safety-related changes to physicians?
1a) Do you utilize physician champions, service-line leaders, department meetings, medical staff committees, newsletters, EHR messaging, grand rounds, or other forums?
2) How do you measure whether the message was successfully received and adopted?
3) Have you found any particularly effective strategies for engaging physicians in medication safety initiatives and obtaining feedback from them?
4) Are there specific governance structures or communication channels that have improved physician awareness and participation?
I appreciate your time and input! Feel free to email me individually if you prefer. Thanks so much,
Best
Gaby
